BTEC Applied Science Grade Calculator

BTEC Applied Science is one of the most popular Level 3 science routes in the UK, covering biology, chemistry and physics through mandatory core units plus optional pathways in biomedical, analytical/forensic or physical science. The same Pearson points system applies across all BTEC Nationals — this calculator pre-loads the Applied Science unit structure so you can enter grades by unit rather than guessing GLH sizes.

Check your exact specification Optional units vary by college and pathway (Biomedical Science, Analytical and Forensic Science, or Physical Science). The template below uses a typical Extended Diploma combination from the Pearson specification examples; swap units if your programme differs. Source: Pearson Applied Science (2016).

FAQ: BTEC Applied Science grades

How is my BTEC Applied Science grade calculated?

Each unit grade is converted into Pearson points based on the unit's GLH. External units (Units 1, 3, 5 and 7 on the Extended Diploma) may use official Pearson points from your results slip rather than a letter grade alone. Add all unit points together and compare the total with the grade boundaries for your qualification size.

How many UCAS points is DDD in BTEC Applied Science Extended Diploma?

DDD in a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is worth 144 UCAS tariff points — the same tariff as AAA at A-Level. D*DD is 152 points and D*D*D* is 168.

Which Applied Science units are externally assessed?

On the Extended Diploma, Units 1, 3, 5 and 7 are externally assessed (exams or synoptic tasks). Units 1 and 5 are written exams; Units 3 and 7 are external synoptic assessments. Smaller qualification sizes include fewer external units — check your specification if you are on Certificate or Extended Certificate.

Does this work for the new BTEC Applied Science AAQ?

This page covers the established 2016 RQF Applied Science specification, which most current students are still on. The new BTEC National (AAQ) Extended Certificate started teaching in September 2025 with a different unit structure — use the generic calculator for AAQ sizes until a dedicated page is available.

My college chose different optional units — can I still use this?

Yes. Keep the mandatory units as listed, then edit, remove or add optional rows to match your programme. The overall grade depends on total Pearson points and your qualification size, not which optional titles you studied.
