Open the CalculatorThe Extended Diploma is the largest BTEC National qualification most students take at Level 3. Because it is equivalent in size to three A-Levels, small changes across your units can have a big impact on your final grade and UCAS points.
What Is a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma?
A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a 1080 guided learning hours (GLH) qualification. It is often taken as a full-time college or sixth form programme and is commonly used for university entry.
The final grade is shown as a three-part grade, such as MMM, DDM, DDD or D*D*D*. Each part broadly reflects the qualification's size compared with three A-Levels, but the grade itself is calculated through Pearson points rather than separate A-Level-style exams.
How the Extended Diploma Grade Is Calculated
Every BTEC unit has a GLH size. Larger units are worth more Pearson points at the same grade, so a Distinction in a 120 GLH unit counts more than a Distinction in a 60 GLH unit.
| Unit Size (GLH) | Pass | Merit | Distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 GLH | 6 | 10 | 16 |
| 90 GLH | 9 | 15 | 24 |
| 120 GLH | 12 | 20 | 32 |

BTEC Extended Diploma Grade Boundaries
Once your Pearson points have been added together, the total is compared with the Extended Diploma boundaries below.
| Extended Diploma Grade | Minimum Pearson Points |
|---|---|
| D*D*D* | 270 |
| D*D*D | 252 |
| D*DD | 234 |
| DDD | 216 |
| DDM | 196 |
| DMM | 176 |
| MMM | 156 |
| MMP | 140 |
| MPP | 124 |
| PPP | 108 |
For example, if your units add up to 202 Pearson points, you clear the 196-point boundary for DDM but not the 216-point boundary for DDD.
BTEC Extended Diploma UCAS Points
Universities usually compare BTEC Extended Diploma results through UCAS tariff points. Here is the tariff table for the main Extended Diploma grades.
| Extended Diploma Grade | UCAS Tariff Points |
|---|---|
| D*D*D* | 168 |
| D*D*D | 160 |
| D*DD | 152 |
| DDD | 144 |
| DDM | 128 |
| DMM | 112 |
| MMM | 96 |
| MMP | 80 |
| MPP | 64 |
| PPP | 48 |
A DDD in an Extended Diploma is worth 144 UCAS points, the same tariff value as AAA at A-Level.
Worked Example: From Units to Final Grade
Here is a simplified example of a student adding up enough completed units to make a 1080 GLH Extended Diploma.
| Unit | GLH | Grade | Pearson Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit 1 | 120 | D | 32 |
| Unit 2 | 120 | D | 32 |
| Unit 3 | 120 | M | 20 |
| Unit 4 | 120 | D | 32 |
| Unit 5 | 90 | M | 15 |
| Unit 6 | 90 | D | 24 |
| Unit 7 | 90 | M | 15 |
| Unit 8 | 90 | D | 24 |
| Unit 9 | 60 | P | 6 |
| Unit 10 | 60 | D | 16 |
| Unit 11 | 60 | M | 10 |
| Unit 12 | 60 | P | 6 |
| Total | 1080 GLH | 232 points | |
These units add up to the full 1080 GLH Extended Diploma and total 232 Pearson points. That clears the 216-point DDD boundary (but not the 234 needed for D*DD), so the final grade is DDD, worth 144 UCAS points.

How many UCAS points is DDD in a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma?
DDD is worth 144 UCAS tariff points. In tariff terms, that is the same as three A grades at A-Level.
Is a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma equivalent to 3 A-Levels?
Yes. The Extended Diploma is a 1080 GLH qualification and is treated as equivalent in size to three A-Levels for UCAS tariff purposes.
What is the highest BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma grade?
The highest grade is D*D*D*. It requires 270 Pearson points and is worth 168 UCAS tariff points.
How do I calculate my BTEC Extended Diploma grade?
Convert each unit grade into Pearson points using the unit's GLH, add the points together, then compare the total with the Extended Diploma grade boundaries.
Can I use this for BTEC Applied Science or Business?
Yes, if your course is a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma using the Pearson points system. The same calculation method applies across subjects such as Applied Science, Business, IT, Sport, and Health and Social Care.
